Woodburn and other Welsh Scousers

Given its proximity to north east Wales, the birthplace and cradle of Welsh football, it might surprise you to learn that Ben Woodburn became only the 19th player from Liverpool Football Club to represent Wales when he won his first cap against Austria.

Ian Rush, undoubtedly the most famous player to have pulled on both the red shirt of Wales and Liverpool is also the player to have collected most caps for Wales whilst at Liverpool. Rush won 67 of his 73 caps for Wales during two spells at Anfield between 1980 and 1996 – the other 6 caps coming during his season long spell at Juventus in 1987/88.

Dean Saunders joined his international strike partner at Anfield for the 1991/92 season but despite Saunders winning eight caps whilst at Anfield, the two club players only played alongside each other for their country on three occasions in that time; a 4-1 defeat to Germany in Nuremburg, a 5-1 defeat to Romania in Bucharest and a 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands, a game in which Rush netted a hat-trick and Saunders also bagged a goal.
